Halls & Manor Houses
With the growth of the gentry class, and the decline of castles, came the building of the manor houses – not primarily defensive, although sometimes moated, and often with faux crenellation. Built of stone or timber, surrounded by pleasure gardens, they were family homes. At the top end were the great Prodigy Houses, built by the Elizabethan nobles, to flaunt their wealth.
