For the wealthier members of society, there was increasing trade, more opportunities to buy luxury goods and a glut of wealth distributed from the dissolution of the monasteries throughout the British Isles. For the poor, life remained hard, with high unemployment and the loss of much of the communal life and festivity that had centred on the Church.
