Religion

Religion dominated the age and religious wars transformed the landscape of Europe. The vision of a single Christendom, led, in theory, if not in fact, by the Emperor and the Pope, was fractured into a collection of nation-states, each sovereign in its own territory. Out of this change, a new world order would emerge, but it was a bloody and brutal birth.
