Abbeys & Priories

The great mediaeval abbeys were centres of wealth and beauty as well as learning. By the time of the Reformation, many had outlived their usefulness as monasticism declined, and people questioned its value. The spoliation and destruction of these beautiful buildings distressed many, but some were given a new lease of life, incorporated into the great country houses built on the old Church lands. Others are just romantic ruins.
