Berkeley Castle has been the home of the Berkeley Family for nine centuries, with archives which go back to the 12th century.

It is one of the March Castles, built on the Anglo-Welsh border. It has all the trappings of a border castle designed to keep the enemy out – trip steps, arrow slits, murder holes, enormous barred doors, slots where the portcullis once fell, and worn stones where sentries stood guard.

The Berkeley family are the only English family still in existence in England that can trace its ancestors from father to son back to Saxon times. The Castle is the oldest building in the country to be inhabited by the same family who built it.

Come and mix with royalty!

King Henry VIII, Queen Anne Boleyn, Lady Boleyn (Anne’s mother) and the Royal Court Ladies-in-Waiting will all be at Berkeley Castle to celebrate the arrival of the Wolf Hall Costume Exhibition.

See the “dressing down of a Tudor Lady” and discover all the different stages of attire to achieve the Tudor ensemble.
