Berkeley Castle has been the home of the Berkeley Family for nine centuries, with archives which go back to the 12th century.

It is one of the March Castle, built on the Anglo-Welsh border. Berkeley Castle has all the trappings of a border castle designed to keep the enemy out – trip steps, arrow slits, murder holes, enormous barred doors, slots where the portcullis once fell, and worn stones where sentries stood guard.

The Berkeley family are the only English family still in existence in England that can trace its ancestors from father to son back to Saxon times. The Castle is the oldest building in the country to be inhabited by the same family who built it.

Don’t miss the opportunity to see five of the costumes actually worn by the actors from the acclaimed BBC adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s Wolf Hall. They will be on display in the Great Hall where several of the scenes from the programme were filmed.

There are two Henry VIII costumes worn by Damien Lewis, two Anne Boleyn dresses worn by Claire Foy and one outfit from Thomas Cromwell's character, worn by Mark Rylance. They are made from richly embroidered fabrics with great attention to detail; it's wonderful to be able to view them at close proximity.

Make sure you pick up one of our Wolf Hall leaflets which details where the different scenes were shot, it's fascinating to discover what goes on behind the scenes!
