Field of Cloth of Gold

The Field of Cloth of Gold was one of the most sumptuous spectacles of the sixteenth century. Held in Northern France, near the last English stronghold of Calais, it was intended to mark a new dawn in the relationship between France and England – one of amity and co-operation, rather than war and rivalry.
