This was the first great age of palace building. Renaissance ideas from Italy were seized upon by Francois I in France, who embarked upon an orgy of chateau building, James V in Scotland, who completely revamped Stirling Castle, and Henry VIII who had no fewer than fifty-five palaces built, enhanced or modified.
